BELLE ISLE MARSH:
Exploring architectural Structures with a Historical Perspective
This was a class project meant to serve as a field guide for visitors to the hidden oasis that is the Belle Isle Marsh. Located in East Boston, this Marsh has had an extensive history serving as a Drive-In Movie Theater, a dumping ground, and now as a government-protected Marsh. After visiting, we set out to tell the extensive history of the Belle Isle Marsh through the existing structures. We looked to add depth to one’s experience at the Marsh, allowing each observation to serve as a representation of the legacy of the Belle Isle Marsh. Detailed drawings, dimensions, and descriptions strengthen the connection between the Marsh and the visitor, while poignant photos highlight the environmental effects on these structures. The guide concludes that these structures’ perseverance not only preserves the Marsh as an attraction, but also provides a monument to those who fought for its protection.
